Frequently Asked Questions
Psychodynamic therapy is a form of therapy that explores how your past experiences and early relationships particularly from childhood shape your current thoughts, feelings and behaviours. It can bring clarity to the way you are feeling now, by exploring the roots of these. With greater understanding, healing and change is possible.
Choosing a therapist can feel overwhelming. The quality of the therapeutic relationship is key to the success of therapy; therefore the first session is mostly to get a feel for how we might work together. During this session I will ask you some questions about why you are seeking therapy and what you hope to get from therapy. It will give you an experience of what it is like to work with me, and if you wish to continue, we will book in some more sessions.
Yes, everything you say in therapy is confidential and is important to provide a space you can trust. There are a couple of exceptional circumstances where it may be necessary to break confidentiality, related to you being at risk of harm. These are explained fully if you decide to work with me. In line with BACP ethical practice I receive supervision where I may discuss our work with a qualified supervisor. This is to ensure I am working ethically and that I am providing you with the best possible support. Your identity is anonymised.
I work in an open ended way, which means we will work together for as long as it feels helpful to you. We meet every week for 50 minutes on the same day and time.
If it’s bothering you then its worth talking about. Therapy offers a different kind of conversation than with friends or family where you can be heard without judgement or given unhelpful advice. Being able to talk freely can bring great relief as well as the possibility to begin to see things from a new perspective. Don't worry if you don't know where to start, we can work it out together.
